Claudia Kaiser, General Manager of Kitab, says:
"Book crossing is an exciting initiative that is gaining popularity worldwide. It's an ideal way for people to discover new authors or find new books by their current favourites. In addition there is the added bonus of being able to search for a specific book, or track one you have left to see where it ends up."
Book Crossing is an internationally recognised form of non-commercial book promotion, and a way of encouraging reading, involving the passing on of tagged books in public spaces or through friends. Via the website www.bookcrossing.com, members can search for and track a specific book - or simply follow where their last book has been since they 'released it into the wild'.
Readers of all ages are invited to join in the fun either by bringing some books for 'wild release' or simply to sign up and become members of this worldwide book crossing community. The ADIBF book crossing kiosk will be situated in the ground floor atrium of the Marina Mall from and will be open during the malls opening hours on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of March. Books will available at the Book Crossing stand and readers are encouraged to select their free copy, then register on the Book Crossing website, leave their review of the book and mention where they have left it once they have read it. All books will be provided in a weather proof plastic bag so that no copies are damaged or soiled when a reader leaves them at another location.
"The Emirates Foundation is delighted to be involved in this 'Book Crossing' initiative which, like our own 'Emirates Read' programme, encourages reading and literacy amongst young Emiratis," said Peter Cleaves, CEO of the Emirates Foundation.
'Emirates Read' is a programme created by the Emirates Foundation and supported by General Holding Corporation.
The Emirates Foundation provided a selection of books, including copies of all the books on the International Prize for Arabic Fiction shortlist, to be given out from its branded booth, and encourage them to be read and passed on. Instructions are printed inside each book, and each book will have its own unique reference number, registered on the Bookcrossing.com website. Anyone who picks up a book can log on to the website, and register themselves as having read the book, and passed it on to friends, family or another member of the public. ADIBF will follow the journey of the books online, as can book lovers, on www.bookcrossing.com.
Over 620,000 individuals are now officially registered as active Book Crossers in 130 countries, with 328 registered as being active in the UAE.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, organized by Kitab in association with Dolphin Energy, will take place at ADNEC from the 17-22 March. Highlights include a Book Signing Corner with a range of Arab and International authors, Cookbooks On Show complete with celebrity chef demonstrations and a Children's Corner including interactive workshops and live author readings.
