Al Jazeera receives Concentra Award

Al Jazeera English has won the prestigious Concentra Breaking News Award for Subina Shrestha's "Up the Irrawady".

Al Jazeera English was given the award last night at a ceremony at the Brussels Le Plaza Hotel. For this year's competition the Concentra Award received 114 entries from 46 news organizations from around the world. The Concentra Breaking News award is presented to the best piece that is shot, edited and broadcast in one day with a maximum duration of 5 minutes.

Subina Shrestha's courageous journey up the Irrawaddy following Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar won the Breaking News award by a unanimous vote from the international panel of Concentra judges. Cyclone Nargis moved across Southern Myanmar on the evening of Friday May 2, 2008 leaving a trail of death and destruction before blowing itself out the next day. It devastated much of the fertile Irrawaddy Delta and Yangon, the nation's main city. Within 24 hours, on May 4th, Al Jazeera journalists were in the region reporting on the devastation and death - to protect them from the authorities, the journalist's names were withheld on air. Al Jazeera Video Journalist Subina Shrestha undertook a dangerous journey up the Irrawaddy to exclusively report of the aftermath and human cost of this natural disaster.

Tony Burman, Managing Director of Al Jazeera English, said:
"Al Jazeera strives to cover every angle and every side of the world's stories and this can take our journalists into intense, breaking news situations. Subina's excellent reporting when faced with perilous hurdles exemplifies Al Jazeera's fearless journalism. This is a highly competitive event and we are honored to be recognized again for our continued exceptional coverage."

Last year, Al Jazeera English's Tony Birtley won the Concentra Breaking News Award for his coverage of the Myanmar popular uprising and military crackdown.
