Social media 'a good branding exercise'

  • Middle East: Thursday, March 05 - 2009 at 17:02

Social media outlets should be used as a branding exercise rather than as direct revenue stream generators concluded the panel at the afternoon session of the AME Info Digital Marketing conference.

'A lot of brands are afraid of engaging with bloggers, but people are going to talk about you anyway,' Omar Koudsi, President and co-founder of networking site Jeeran told conference delegates.

'But it's not about controlling a message, it's about engagement.'

Panellists agreed that social media was a useful tool for helping to spread awareness but the consensus was that, at the moment it was very difficult to make money from it.

'We use it more as a branding exercise than as a profit related exercise,' confirmed Jassim Ali, Digital Director at PHD IQ. 'It's a great catalyst for your brand.'

'Expand your digital footprint. The more places you are, the more ambitious you are,' Jimmy Leach, Editorial Director for UK newspaper the Independent told delegates.
