- PRESS RELEASE
On March 9, 2009, UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development and the Multinational Development for Women and Information Technology (MDWIT) co-hosted a session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The CSW session witnessed the gathering of thousands of visionaries, international leaders, practitioners and policy makers who will engage on the theme of women's role in the development and advancement of our planet. The summit also announced the formal launching of the Center for Women and Technology for the Arab Region, the Center for Women and Technology for the United States and the Global Women and Technology Collaborative.
This will enable the regions of North America and Middle East to partner and discuss issues pertaining to women in knowledge society and develop a global strategy aimed at engaging girls and women in the knowledge society so that they can access, use, develop, design, and provide leadership in technology programs, businesses, education and research. The partnership is also aspiring to stretch its activities to other regions of the globe with the aim of sharing best practices.
An MOU to strengthen educational and economic cooperation between MIDWIT and DWC was signed during the Leadership Summit of Middle East Women and Technology held in Dubai Women's College in November 2008. This meeting will serve as a strategic high point for their shared work since 2005.
As said by Behjat "This is an appropriate venue for the international ICT leaders to recognize the collaborative accomplishments between the Arab Region and the USA in expanding global initiatives for increased women's participation in the knowledge economy through sustainable economical development."
