- PRESS RELEASE
Ibrahim Al Bastaki, a final year HD Civil Engineering Technology student from Dubai Men's College, attended a three-day Global Changemakers' meeting in Qatar in February as a representative of the UAE's youth.
Global Changemakers is a project managed by the British Council in Switzerland and its patron is Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister. The aim of the Global Changemakers' programme is to bring together young people aged between 15 and 28 from around the world and to encourage them to share their concerns about local and global problems, discuss possible solutions to such issues, participate in awareness-raising campaigns for other young people and take action to bring about change to make the world a better place.
During the Qatar Global Changemakers' meeting which was attended mainly by young delegates from Arab countries, Ibrahim participated in a number of think-tank workshops and attended presentations given by a young Jordanian who outlined his campaign of support for Palestine, a young American who had been involved in the organization of Barack Obama's electoral campaign in four US states and the UK Youth Parliament which shared its experience of setting up community projects in Great Britain. In addition to this, an action plan was drawn up by the delegates and Ibrahim, along with his fellow delegates, now plans to set up a Global Changemakers' advocacy group and awareness-raising group in the UAE to try to deal with problems such as unemployment, the situation in Gaza and inter-cultural issues in the country.
Commenting on his involvement in Global Changemakers Ibrahim said, "Although studying is a very important part of our development I strongly feel that young people should also be more aware of what is going on around them and be prepared to contribute to positive social change. Through my involvement with Global Changemakers I have become much more socially aware, have learned to look at problems from different perspectives and I have become determined to make a difference to the world in which we live."
