Sharjah's family of museums include art, archaeology, maritime, calligraphy, Islamic civilization, natural history, science and heritage among others.

Manal Ataya, Director General, Sharjah Museums Department, said:
"Following our successful participation at ITB Berlin last year, SMD is taking part in this year's edition to promote Sharjah's family of 18 museums to a wider audience. In cooperation with other government departments including Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, SMD hopes to continue to raise Sharjah's profile as the cultural hub of the region."

"Sharjah, known as 'The Cultural Capital of Arabia', an honour awarded by UNESCO in 1998, has a rich tapestry of museums, which are the Emirate's cultural asset. They appeal to tourists, especially from the West, who have a strong interest in cultural tourism. Sharjah has been witnessing steady growth in international tourist arrivals over the years led by its cultural aspects," added Ataya.

ITB Berlin is the world's largest exhibition for tour operators, booking systems, carriers, hotels and other tourism related service providers to promote their services and products and attracts more than 10, 000 exhibitors annually, more than 30% of whom are not from Europe.

Ataya said, "SMD will continue to promote the museums of Sharjah at the Arabian Travel Market 2009, World Travel Market in London and GCC road show later this year."

The Sharjah Museums Department, established in 2006 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, aims to promote the emirate's rich legacy of arts, heritage and culture.
