Lebanon opens embassy in Syria

On Monday morning, the Lebanese Charge d'Affaires Rami Mortada raised the Lebanese flag at the official opening of the country's new embassy in Syria.

The embassy was opened in the upscale residential area Abu Rammani, where the American embassy is also located, after a deal was reached in October to establish diplomatic ties for the first time since both countries won independence from France some 60 years ago.

Beirut has named career diplomat Michel Khoury, its current envoy to Cyprus, as the new ambassador but he is yet to arrive at his posting.

Damascus has not yet named an envoy to Lebanon, but its embassy was opened in December although it is not fully operational. However, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Mu'allim has promised that an ambassador will be appointed soon.
