TRA cracks down on illegal operations
- Bahrain: Wednesday, March 25 - 2009 at 09:35
- PRESS RELEASE
Search, inspection and seizure activities of The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) recently continued with the crack-down on illegal Internet-based telephony devices.
The devices were being used to support an international calling service by individuals who were not licensed to provide such a service.
"As a proactive measure in protecting the interests of consumers as well as those of Licensed Operators, TRA will be conducting further search and inspection activities amongst licensed operators, phone shops, retailers and other commercial entities," said TRA's General Director Mr. Alan Horne.
"We are concerned that consumers are being taken advantage of and are paying unlicensed operators for unlicensed activities. Further we are also concerned that we protect the investments made by legitimate licensed operators," he added.
Under Article 77 of the Telecommunications Law, Staff members of TRA, who are designated with characteristics of judicial officers, may enter into any premises, vehicle or site that contains, or is suspected of containing telecommunications equipment and facilities.
"Our communications lines are always open to the public, and we encourage all parties to report on any suspected violations of the telecommunications law, or any potential illegal operation," said TRA's ICT Operations Manager, Mr. Ahmed Aldoseri, who is leading TRA's inspection activities.
He added, "In cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, TRA will implement its plan of action in order to provide continuous monitoring and inspection of the telecoms industry to proactively detect and deter illegal activities."
