This being the second time that the UAE has taken part in this annual event, 2008 saw Dubai join countries around the world in the turning off of lights for one hour across the city. This year FEWA, the key utility provider for the Northern Emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, is encouraging all of its users, in addition to its 3000 + employees to take part in this international event.

'Because our area of service covers such a vast portion of the country, we are happy to take this opportunity to promote the virtues of energy conservation to the UAE public.'

said Mohammed Khalil Al Shamsi, Head of FEWA Corporate Communications. 'Our authority has always been involved in various initiatives that support environmental concerns and so it is only natural that we participate in this year's event.'

Shamsi added.'However for this event to be considered as a success, the active contribution of the residents of the Northern Emirates is paramount. Therefore we are asking for all our customers to pledge their support in an action that will not cost them anything to participate. By turning off all non-essential lighting for Earth Hour 2009 our customers will find that they will not only save themselves a little money, but will also help draw attention to the importance energy conservation.'

Last year an estimated 50 million people globally switched off their lights with many of the world's global landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Times Square New York and the Sidney Opera House going dark for one hour.
