The seminar also provided attendees with diet tips on maximising weight loss after surgery and maintaining it.
The two-fold seminar was conducted by Dr. Ladha el Zaqui, Consultant General Surgeon, MPH and Mona Moghrabi, Clinical Dietician, MPH. The first part of the seminar highlighted the many forms of weight-loss surgery: laparoscopic and open bypass; laparoscopic placement of the adjustable gastric band/lap band; and the laparoscopic gastric sleeve procedure. The second part of the seminar focused on the diet do's and don'ts post Bariatric Surgery.
Yvonne Medhurst, Business Development Manager, Women's Guild in Oman, says,
"All too often because of modern day living, we ignore our eating habits and this adversely impacts our health. The presentation given by Dr Ladha and Mona was par excellence. It was very informative and covered all aspects of Bariatric Surgery. There were several aspects of this surgery we were not aware of, especially the post operative care. Also, Mona Moghrabi made the seminar very interesting and informed us about all we needed to know about post operative diet needs. Seminars of this nature should be conducted more often."
"Educational seminars such as these give people considering weight loss surgery a chance to speak directly with the surgeon and a multi-disciplinary team in a relaxed setting. This low pressure environment is the best way to learn directly from the surgeon about the different surgical options - Gastric Bypass, Gastric Banding and understand how weight loss surgery will aid in weight reduction and general well being. It also serves as a good time to learn about the process patients will follow before and after surgery in order to maximise its benefits", says Dr. Ladha el Zaqui, Consultant General Surgeon, MPH.
MPH's patient-centric approach to the services it provides extends beyond the doctors and nurses that staff its team. The Bariatric Surgery service at MPH is tailored with specialised bariatric equipment and furniture to help patients feel comfortable each time they visit. MPH's team of experts also includes a Bariatric Surgeon and a clinical dietitian.
"Between the thousands of websites and chat rooms on the Internet and the books and news stories about Gastric Bypass and Gastric Banding, it's hard for people considering weight loss surgery to separate the facts from fiction regarding these procedures. We at MPH are glad that we could be useful in this regard and provide the Women's Guild in Oman with the true picture surrounding this minimally invasive and less painful surgery", says Gary Dorahy, Country Manager - OMPC and Hospital Director, MPH.
