ADWC welcomes India's former president
- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, April 04 - 2009 at 15:09
- PRESS RELEASE
Higher Colleges of Technology's Abu Dhabi Women's College played host Tuesday to India's former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
He was accompanied to the College by India's Ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Talmiz Ahmad, as well as by First Secretary for Culture and Education Mr. S. K. Nangia.
Dr. Kalam was an influential scientist long before he served as President of India (2002-2007). Several of his books, including India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium and Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power within India, have inspired Indians around the world to work for their country's advancement. Dr. Kalam is visiting the UAE on the occasion of HCT's international student conference, "Education Without Borders," where he delivered a keynote address.
Abu Dhabi Women's College students were anxious to gather in the College's Auditorium to hear Dr. Kalam's speech. He has, over the course of his career, taken a special interest in young people's role in developing India, and he shared what he has learned with about one hundred fifty young Emirati women. He then took questions from a panel of students, who asked him about barriers he has faced in life and how he has been able to overcome them. The students also sought his views about women in India; India's role in today's world; and world's current economic problems.
Dr. Bradley Cook, ADWC's Director, thanked Dr. Kalam and the other guests for their visit to the College. "Dr. Kalam has taught us not only about the situation in India, but also about how young people can influence the world for the better. It has been our great pleasure to welcome him and his distinguished companions to ADWC."
