Middle East doctor awarded international ethnic research grant to study relationship between ethnicity and breast cancer

Dr. Nadeem Mohammad Nagi, Director at National Oncology Centre - Yemen Republic is amongst the first researchers to be awarded funding as part of a new initiative which aims to advance understanding of breast cancer in ethnically diverse (non-Caucasian) populations.

The GSK Oncology International Ethnic Research Initiative (GSK ERI) was established to address the lack of breast cancer data in these populations, through the provision of grants for independent, non-clinical research projects.

During the event, Dr. Nagi spoke about the current prevalence and burden of breast cancer in the region. He also educated the audience on how his research would help in understanding the cause of the number one fatal disease among women. In addition, his presentation delved into the perceived link between ethnicity and breast cancer.

"I feel tremendously honored to be awarded this prestigious grant. This is not only an achievement for me, but for the entire medical practice in the region. This initiative couldn't have come at a more opportune moment as recent figures indicate that of the 3.2 billion women in the world afflicted with cancer, 90% of them are non-Caucasian. Over the last few decades, the incidence of breast cancer has grown rapidly in many developing countries compared to developed countries, where the growth is slower," Dr. Nagi added.

The grant is provided to support independent, non-clinical research focused on improving understanding of the epidemiology and genetics of breast cancer in ethnically diverse populations of the world.

Dr. Nagi further elaborated that in developing countries many women lack access to preventive and curative services. "There is a paucity of clinical research and reliable epidemiological data. Treatment guidelines are based on research collected from the Western world."

With over 20 years experience, Dr. Nagi is currently the Exclusive Director of the National Oncology Centre (NOC) in Yemen. He is well versed in the following medical procedures: bone marrow aspiration and biopsy examination, fine needle aspiration (FNA) Cytology, Lymph Node, Liver and Splenic biopsy and aspiration as well as Body Cavity Paracenthesis with lumber puncture.

About the GSK ERI:
The GSK ERI was established to provide grants to support independent, non-clinical research focused on improving understanding of the epidemiology and genetics of breast cancer in ethnically diverse (non-Caucasian) populations of the world. Grants will be provided annually to investigators in Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Africa (or in other countries with ethnically diverse populations, excluding the USA and Europe).

Research projects considered may include breast cancer epidemiology; ethnicity; genetics; risk assessment; biomarkers of risk or other factors causing or contributing to breast cancer; and other aspects of non-clinical research.

It is believed that the GSK ERI is the first international research grant programme dedicated to non-clinical, breast cancer research in ethnically diverse (non-Caucasian) women, outside the USA and Europe.

GSK is committed to promoting excellence in scientific research. Every effort has gone into ensuring that the GSK ERI is conducted in an ethical manner with the independence of the applications review rigorously maintained. The application review and final selection of grant recipients is conducted by an independent Expert Steering Committee, over which GSK has no influence.
