Schools hit back at Dubai inspections
- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, April 09 - 2009 at 12:24
Some schools in Dubai have reacted angrily to the ratings they were given by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB), claiming their awarded grades were too low. The Dubai schools inspectorate has said that 11 of the first 69 schools it inspected are in need of improvement, with six being judged as unsatisfactory, the lowest of the four grades.
Some schools have been ordered to produce a follow-up report for parents on how they will improve, but no school will be moved up a category until next year's inspection. Results were published on April 2.
However, some schools have reacted angrily to the scorings they were given. A spokesperson for Emirates International Schools (EIS) told 7Days that the group were planning to hire independent international inspectors to conduct assessments after its schools in Jumeirah and the Meadows were give adequate ratings.
EIS suggested that they inspectors lacked the required skills to conduct inspections, claiming the ratings were severely flawed. The spokesperson added that DSIB 'lacks the experience to extensively assess the schools in Dubai'.
Schools were given one of four grades - unsatisfactory, acceptable, good and outstanding. Of the 69 inspected, four were judged outstanding, 25 as good, 34 acceptable and six unsatisfactory.
