'With a project of the magnitude of Dubai Festival City, there is a lot of preparatory work to be done before construction can start on the tangible assets,' said Lee Tabler, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Festival City Development. 'This work is unseen by the general public but is essential in the preliminary stages of any real estate development.'

The first milestone achieved at the development has been an eight-month long project to remove the original treated effluent pipeline servicing downtown Deira and replace it with 16 kilometres of new pipeline.

'The main line from Deira to the Al Awir treatment plant ran alongside Dubai Creek, right underneath areas of major construction for Dubai Festival City,' said Tabler.

The new line has two 8-kilometre long pipes, one of 1200mm diameter to take untreated waste out to Al Awir and one of 1300mm diameter to bring back treated sewage effluent for irrigation. The pipeline will also provide for increases in volume due to anticipated development expansions in Deira.

'This pipeline is a major milestone for the Dubai Festival City project. With the switch over to the new line and the removal of the existing line, foundation work can commence on the City Core, one of the main offerings of Dubai Festival City,' said Tabler.

'The City Core is the hub of this signature 'city-within-a-city'. The marina, canal, shops, restaurants, residential and entertainment offerings are integral to the very essence of the project which will offer new ways of living, working, dining, shopping and entertainment to residents and visitors alike.'
