The aviation hub was one of the UAE's 20 top corporate performers in 2008, which were recognised for their contribution to the country's economic growth, in addition to the development of their respective industries.

In accepting the award, Paul Griffths, CEO of Dubai Airports said, "It is indeed a great honour for Dubai Airports to be recognised by such a prestigious publication as Newsweek."

"The growth and development of Dubai city and of Dubai Airports is closely inter-linked. As the city has grown, Dubai Airports has seen an increase in the number of its client airlines and their passengers, bringing more business, industry and professional expertise to enhance Dubai's business acumen and standing in the world community. Dubai Airports is honoured to be part of and contributing to the city's continuing success," he added.

Dubai Airports was chosen for the award by senior correspondents and writers of the Newsweek (Arabic) editorial board. The inaugural presentation of the awards marked the magazine's ninth anniversary.

The Arabic edition of the English-language Newsweek International magazine is printed in Kuwait and circulated among the GCC states, with a total weekly circulation/subscription of some 112,000.

About Dubai Airports
Dubai Airports owns and manages the operation and development of both of Dubai's airports - Dubai International as well as the upcoming Dubai World Central — Al Maktoum International.

Dubai International was the only airport among the top 10 busiest airports in the world to register positive growth in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International increased from 34.34 million in 2007 to 37.44 million, a year-on-year growth of 9%, while cargo tonnage increased by 9.4% to 1.8 million tonnes. Connected to over 200 destinations across six continents through more than 120 airlines, Dubai International has grown at an unparalleled rate for almost a decade and accounts for nearly 25% of all passenger movement in the Middle East and Africa region.

With the opening of the Emirates-dedicated Terminal 3 in October 2008, now acknowledged as the most successful launch of a terminal of its size in the history of aviation, Dubai International is well on its way to becoming the world's future aviation hub. Terminal 3 has doubled Dubai International's operational capacity to 60 million passengers per year, a figure that will increase to 75 million passengers with the completion of the now under-construction A380-dedicated airside facility.

Work is also in progress on the first phase of Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International, which will eventually become the world's largest airport with a capacity of 120 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.
