Through the program, H.E. Ahmed Abdulla Sambi promoted investment in Comoros and encouraged investors to take advantage of the many business opportunities in the island country.
As part of its growth strategy, the Comoros Government developed a comprehensive program to fight poverty and unemployment, which was outlined during the Donor Conference and Economic Growth 2005 held in Mauritious Island; held in the presence of the President of the Republic of South Africa, the representative of the UN Secretary-General, and a number of the world's richest people.
The interview also highlighted the major phases that the country has passed through; as it was once one of the states of the Sultanate of Oman, and joined the Arab League during 1993.
Its President, Sambi, studied Islamic Sciences at Al Azhar Al Sharif in Egypt, and he also studied in Saudi Arabia before moving to Iran; a background which provided him broad public support to become the first elected president in the Comoros since its independence from France.
The Comoros is today considered as a modest-income developing country, as 80 per cent of its population depends on agriculture and fishing.
The Comoros economy mainly depends on agriculture and the remittances of the national labor working abroad in addition to tourism. The customs taxes imposed on the foreign trade are the main source of the general budget revenues.
The government seeks to further develop its tourism resources and attract investments to support the development process in the country.
Comoros is located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. It consists of three small independent islands; Mohili "Fomboni", Enjoin "Mutsamudu" and the big Comor "Maroni", in addition to Mayotte "Mamotzo" which is still under the French flag despite Comoros demands to restore it.
