This year's conference theme was "M4CT: Maths for Critical Thinking," a topic HE Sheikh Nahayan discussed in his speech, encouraging students to develop skills in thinking and problem-solving.
Faculty and students also enjoyed presentations by acclaimed math educator Dr. Marcus du Sautoy, a keynote speaker on both days of the conference.
Dr. du Sautoy, Oxford University's Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics, is a best-selling author of The Music of the Primes as well as the presenter of the recent BBC television series, The Story of Maths. He also writes a regular column for The Times of London called "Sexy Maths." All of these efforts have provoked an increased interest in maths among countless admirers.
Dr. du Sautoy told students and faculty about making the BBC TV series, The Story of Maths, which premiered around the world last October. He also answered the burning question, "Why did Beckham choose the 23 shirt?" A clue: 23 is a prime number.
Dr. Bradley Cook, ADWC's Director, asserted,
"HCT is honored to host Dr. du Sautoy, a man whose energy level and ability to explain things has taken the pleasure of maths to a worldwide audience."
HCT students who attended the conference also noticed Dr. du Sautoy's abilities. One student stated, "I feel very encouraged about my abilities in maths after hearing Dr. du Sautoy. He makes it seem interesting and important."
