This program joins together the Group's social and environmental responsibility initiatives centred on eight priorities: local development, health, nutrition, child protection, energy, water conservation, waste management and biodiversity.
Managing Director of Accor Hospitality ME Christophe Landais says:
"The idea behind 'Earth Guest Day' is that we are all guests of the earth and should take the time out to give back to the planet. This initiative makes Accor one of the first hospitality groups in the Middle East and one of the first in the world to implement and enforce sustainable codes of practice and regulations in its hotel operations."
The focus of this year's activities in the Middle East is on water conservation, as well as increasing Accor associates' awareness on the scarcity of safe drinking water as a commodity. Water is the top priority for the Middle East as the region has one of the world's highest demands for clean water due to limited supply, remarkable population growth and determined economic diversification efforts.
With this in mind, Ibis, Mercure, Novotel, MGallery and Sofitel hotels carried lectures on wise water consumption, competition amongst staff on the best water-saving ideas, beach clean-ups, as well as tree-planting, waste segregation and recycling.
A visit to the desalination plant, Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL), Dubai's industrial flagship and the largest single site aluminium smelter in the world, took place to see firsthand how seawater is processed into safe drinking water. Some employees also visited children with special needs and donated blood.
