Syria's determination to develop new markets recently has seen tourist numbers soar. However, like the rest of the world, 2009 has not been an easy year for the country. Syria's Tourism Ministry confirmed a 15% rise in visitors in 2008, with the figure standing at 5.9m visitors. The World Economic Forum's Global Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked Syria fourth among countries that had improved their tourist performance during 2008, as well as seeing Syria jump to 85th position in the overall global competitiveness list.
