The winning schools were selected from Ajman, Sharjah, Al Ain, the Western region, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and were nominated first prizewinners across all 3 categories, namely health, safety and environment. Students organized an exhibition for their projects on the various themes of the award, at the ceremony.
Project evaluation was based on a number of criteria such as extensive research, presentation skills, teamwork, degree of practical implementation and the level of engagement the students had with their communities while researching their projects.
The judging panel, a combination of environmental, health and education experts in the UAE, visited all participating schools to review ongoing developments in project submissions and used these visits as the basis to short list finalists.
"Projects were selected in accordance to issues that are relevant to the UAE and the level of integration between the students to serve the community. The BEA teaches the youth about their obligation towards the nation by finding creative and practical solutions to societal issues that touch everybody's life such as health, safety and the environment, areas of paramount importance to Shell"
said Omar Al Qurashi, Head of Communications for Shell in Dubai.
Al Qurashi added: "We are very proud of the students and have to thank the Ministry of Education for their continuous support"
"This is the 13th year that we have cooperated with Shell within this distinctive educational framework", said Ahmad Abdulrahman, Director of student activities at the Ministry of Education.
"Each of the projects contributes substantially to environmental protection, health and safety knowledge and the education of youth. It is important that we tackle these issues by getting the schools all over the UAE involved in encouraging the conceptualization of a wider range of initiatives", added Mr. Abdurrahman.
The BEA, UAE's premier platform to tackle and raise awareness on environmental issues, focuses on three themes: Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). Schools across the UAE participated by submitting project proposals on safety at home, safety on the road, safety at school, global warming, alternative energy, water and electricity usage, the ecological footprint, obesity, smoking, diabetes and physical activity.
This cycle presented further challenges to the creativity of schools by enabling engagement in projects, which have more substantive outputs and longer lasting effects.
