Germany-Jordan Car Rally against hunger reaches Jordan

165 old and vintage cars arrive in Jordan as part of the fourth 'Drive Against Hunger' rally that kicked off on May 2 in Oberstaufen, Germany.

The rally supports joint projects between the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Jordanian Alliance Against Hunger (JAAH).

"This rally is a great opportunity to raise awareness about the issues of poverty and hunger," said WFP's representative in Jordan Faten Al Hindi. "It also gives an example of how individuals can support humanitarian efforts through unique initiatives like this one."

The United Nations World Food Programme is organizing the rally in cooperation with Sakhr al Fayez, who heads the non-governmental organization Mount Nebo Society under the Jordanian National Alliance Against Hunger, German journalist Wilfried Gehr.

Jordanian officials, celebrities and companies sponsoring attended the kick-off ceremony Oberstaufen Municipal Government hosted in the Allgaeu region south of Germany.

More than 300 drivers from nine countries including Germany, Austria and Jordan are taking part in this year's rally. The rally participants distributed along the route to Jordan several items including children clothes, shoes and school items in low-income communities. They are also carrying 200 hearing aids for a Jordanian local society for disabled children.

The drivers will also donate their cars, all not less than twenty years old, at the end of the rally. Cars will be sold in an auction and proceeds will go to the Jordanian Food Bank and joint JAAH and WFP projects.

The non-profit JAAH, founded in 2004, is a member of the International Alliance Against Hunger (IAAH). It relies on a wide national partnership in Jordan of governmental and non-governmental, civil society, and private sector organizations.
