Sharjah Museums Department celebrates International Museum Day with seminars and tours

Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is organizing a host of cultural and social activities to promote the museums in the Emirate and thus strengthen tourism, as part its celebration of International Museum Day.

The International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18, and this year, the theme is 'Museums and Tourism.' Sharjah Museums Department is showcasing workshops, seminars and museum tours as part of the celebrations which will run from May 14 to May 20.

Sharjah Natural History and Botanical Museum will organise workshops at Mega Mall from May 14 to 20, and Sharjah Discovery Center, Sharjah Science Museum and Sharjah Aquarium will organize mobile exhibits, family workshops and bubble shows at Sharjah Aquarium on May 15, 16 and 18. Al Mahatta Museum will feature an exhibition titled "Journey through sky" on May 17.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamed Al Qasimi, Al Eslah School Museum, Bait Khalid Bin Ibrahim, Sharjah Hisn and Bait Al Naboodah, will also organize a symposium titled "Museums and Tourism" on May 18 at Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. A tour to the Archaeology Museum will be organized by Sharjah Archeology Museum from Mega Mall.

For those who enjoy calligraphy, the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum and Sharjah Heritage Museum will organize an Arabian calligraphy and heritage exhibition at the Sharjah Women's college on May 18 and 19.

Manal Ataya, Director General, Sharjah Museums Department, said:
"Museums play an essential role in strengthening the cultural fabric of the society apart from preserving the history and traditions of nations. Through our celebration of International Museum Day, we want to spread awareness on the importance of museums to promoting tourism and showcasing the different facets of arts and creativity."


"Sharjah Museums Department aims to develop museums and link them to tourist activities in line with the objectives of emirate of Sharjah, which has always had a profound interest in promoting heritage, arts, culture and tourism," Ataya added.

The Sharjah Museums Department, established in 2006 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, aims to promote the emirate's rich legacy of arts, heritage and culture.
