Sony Science Show 2010 to include array of interactive experiments for students
- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, May 16 - 2009 at 13:03
- PRESS RELEASE
Sony Gulf FZE today announced the Sony Science Show 2010, the fifth edition of the widely popular annual event held in collaboration with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai, will offer Grade-4 school children a fresh bouquet of interactive experiments, adding a whole new dimension to scientific literacy in the region.
The show held at the Dubai Knowledge Village auditorium was led by renowned Japanese scientific 'edutainer' Soichi Nishimura who travels around the world to entertain and teach children about the magical world of science.
Focusing on topics such as conduction, air pressure and flight dynamics, students experienced the joy of converting text book theories into practical experiments using basic props such as balloons, paper, strings and cardboard boxes.
As the grand finale to Sony Science Show 2009, Nishimura demonstrated the principle of conductivity and static electricity, where the young audience formed a human chain to experience the collective jolt as static electricity passed through them.
Osamu Miura, Managing Director, Sony Gulf FZE, said, "Through the annual Sony Science Show we aim to nurture the interest of students in science in an environment of personal engagement. The shows are designed to encourage academic institutions and motivate students to take up interactive scientific experiments on their own by leveraging their creative best."
"Our recent poll of school children in Dubai has revealed that as many as one-in-four have career ambitions in science and is the most favourite subject of a significant number of youngsters. The excitement of the fourth graders during the show strongly indicated their keenness for the subject and we believe such events can effectively contribute to knowledge creation in the region," he added.
The Sony Science Shows are a part of Sony's global community initiatives, which include events such as the Sony ExploraScience Museum, the Sony Eco Plaza and the Sony Foundation for Education in Japan and the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York.
The shows have proved hugely popular among students in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, where the annual shows have drawn the participation of more than 11,000 students from 30 UAE schools since its inception in 2006.
Admission to the Sony Science Shows is by invitation only and requests from schools are entertained on a first-come-first-served basis. The schools or students are not charged any fee for attending the event.
