Lucent Technologies introduces e-world technology

Today's business world has become an 'e-world'. To support enhanced Internet services with interactive, multimedia-based e-commerce and conferencing, virtual private networks (VPN), and other e-applications, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) has introduced a new era of network services at GITEX 2000.

"The world of telecommunications is changing more rapidly than ever," said Maurice Henderson, Lucent Technologies' Managing Director, Gulf Region. "In particular, the availability of fast access options such as digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modems is enabling applications that will drive networking demands to unprecedented heights. In contrast to the historical online model of text-based e-mail and Web pages with low resolution static graphics, the new e-world is an exciting multimedia showcase of video, sound and other capabilities that stretch the current generation of processing and communications capabilities beyond all traditional limitations."

In particular, the availability of xDSL and cable modem technologies that Lucent is presenting at GITEX is rapidly transforming the online environment. These technologies have taken a quantum leap that it is unprecedented in communications and processor technology. xDSL and cable modem technologies are providing a 10- to 30-fold increase virtually overnight. In fact, Henderson says, consumers with this type of capability now often have faster access to the Internet at home than they do at the office. Consequently, the availability of high-speed networks is revolutionizing Internet services. With xDSL and cable modem services acting as enabling technologies new business models are emerging that exploit these capabilities. As computing capabilities increase and Internet bandwidth
escalates on a parallel course, Internet-based applications, too, continue to make quantum leaps in technical sophistication.
