Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), a leader in optical networking, is lighting up the millennium in more ways than one. Signaling the end of an era, Lucent is waving goodbye to communications, as we know it. With products such as 10G+ solutions and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology being presented at GITEX this year, Lucent is once again
demonstrating its leadership and the extent of its optical networking offering.

According to Yousef Mugharbil, Lucent Technologies' Senior Product Marketing Manager, ONG-EMEA, the mind-boggling increase in network traffic, spurred largely by the Internet, has increased the build-up of service providers networks around the world by deploying optical technology called DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing).

"DWDM greatly increases capacity, or bandwidth, by simultaneously transmitting information over multiple wavelengths, or colors of light, on a single strand of fiber," explained Mugharbil. "It's like adding lanes to a highway without having to widen it. This evolution is opening up a flood of capacity for sending more information at incredibly higher speeds and has revolutionized telecommunications."

Together with the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks, the WaveStar Digital Video System (DVS) provides a flexible, reliable and robust platform to efficiently deliver broadcast-quality video, audio and broadband data.

"Backed by the research and development of the world renowned Bell Labs, Lucent is well positioned to offer end-to-end solutions in the backbone, regional and access optical networks," says Yousef Mugharbil. " Our optical networking solutions is designed to integrate in network environment, or by implementing end-to-end Lucent solutions."

Using DWDM, telecom carriers can shuttle huge amounts of data, video and voice calls travelling literally at the speed of light. And with more than 4,000 systems installed around the world representing the largest worldwide deployment of DWDM equipment - Lucent is the vendor of choice for many carriers when deploying optical networks.

Optical technology is the very foundation of next-generation networks, and Lucent's Optical Networking Group (ONG) is at the heart of the optical revolution.
