- PRESS RELEASE
Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech), the major life sciences hub in the Middle East and a member of Tecom Investments, today announced it highlighted its ambition to grow into a globally recognized centre for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries through leveraging its expanded presence at the BIO International Convention 2009 in Atlanta, US.
The event also showcased companies and biotech innovations that help heal, fuel and feed the world.
BIO International Convention 2009 served as a platform to discuss breakthroughs in medicine, diagnostics, environment, energy production, food and agriculture. It also addressed important industry issues and challenges such as healthcare pricing and access, intellectual property protection, climate change and biofuels, drought resistant crops, animal biotech, and capital formation, and partnering strategies in a tight credit environment.
Dr. Marco Baccanti, Executive Director, DuBiotech said, "Our presence at BIO International Convention 2009 highlighted the importance we place on showcasing our advantages as a free zone to global companies. Similar to the previous editions, this year's BIO International Convention enabled us to initiate contact with key business decision-makers and generated several business leads. The unique purpose-built infrastructure and a host of logistical merits at DuBiotech were an eye-opener for some industry professionals at the event."
Throughout the three-day event, the DuBiotech senior management team (at Stand 1914) highlighted the range of business incentives the cluster offers to companies keen on establishing their regional base in Dubai.
The officials also advised potential partners who were keen to tap the increasing business opportunities in the rapidly expanding Middle East market for life sciences products and services.
Baccanti added, "Through our participation this year, we offered the professionals at the convention and our peers in the US an in-depth perspective of the immense investment potential in the Arab world. Our presence at the BIO International Convention 2009 significantly facilitated global companies to seek our alliance for strengthening their presence in the Middle East."
Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech) is dedicated to creating an advanced technical and community infrastructure to accelerate the growth of the life sciences industry. Currently, DuBiotech hosts some of the world's top pharmaceutical companies including Amgen, Genzyme, Merck Serono, and Pfizer.

About DuBiotech:Announced in February 2005, the Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech) is a science and business park dedicated to the biotechnology industry, set within a 'free zone'. DuBiotech has two arms.
The first is the Foundation for Research and Innovation (FRI) that will initially focus on government-funded R&D in medicine and genetics, plant biotechnology encompassing food and agricultural biotech, environmental biotech and equine-related biotechnology.
Other areas include drug discovery, stem cell research, infectious diseases and forensic research. The second arm of DuBiotech aims to set up a biotechnology industry cluster with cutting-edge infrastructure, facilities and services for incubators, R&D labs, biotech-related educational institutions, suppliers, biotech-related manufacturing companies and organizations from other sectors in the industry.
DuBiotech is advised by an independent steering committee on scientific, business and ethical matters. In cooperation with global research leader, RTI International, DuBiotech is developing comprehensive regulations that address all aspects of biotech activity.
Being in a 'free zone' means biotechnology firms in the park have 100% exemption from any form of taxation for 50 years, 100% business ownership and 100% repatriation of capital.
