American University in Dubai honors U.S. Consul General for his friendship and support

  • United Arab Emirates: Saturday, May 23 - 2009 at 14:14
  • PRESS RELEASE

The American University in Dubai (AUD) honored U.S. Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates Mr. Paul Sutphin during a dinner held in the presence of former U.S. Secretary of State General Colin Powell (Ret.), U.S. Ambassador to the UAE Mr. Richard G. Olson, Jr. Members of the Governing Board of AUD, representatives from the U.S. Embassy in the UAE and the U.S. Consulate in Dubai, friends and family of Consul General Sutphin, and AUD faculty, staff and administration members.

As he leaves his position after three years as U.S. Consul General and for his long-time friendship and support, AUD awarded Mr. Sutphin a commemorative memento.

President Lance de Masi commented:
"He has always been there for AUD. I don't think his job description includes advocating for an American university. That's all the more reason to miss him and to express our appreciation as he moves on to other frontiers."

Consul General Sutphin has been involved with AUD activities for the past three years and has been a major player in the success of many events held on campus. He has honored the University many times by speaking at several functions, and has made it a ritual to attend the graduation ceremonies.

Responding to the honor, Consul General Sutphin noted, "The opportunity to work closely with AUD has been one of the highlights of my three years in Dubai, and a great privilege. The University has continued to grow and prosper in that time and I have enjoyed engaging with students, faculty, and the administration on a wide range of programs. I have no doubt AUD will continue to build on its considerable success, as well as increase its collaboration with a number of U.S. universities."

Mr. Sutphin has also been very involved with American students at AUD, especially within the Study Abroad and Clinton Scholars Programs. From meeting with them to facilitating their stays in Dubai, Consul General Sutphin has gone beyond the call of duty; he has regularly hosted each group of Clinton scholars at his home to discuss their cross-cultural experiences.

Mr. Sutphin assumed charge as U.S. Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates in August 2006. A member of the Senior Foreign Service, he has wide-ranging experience on Middle East and North African issues.
