This mini survey amongst doctors in the Middle East included respondents from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Tunisia, and Algeria among others and was developed to gain an understanding of the current dialogue between doctors and patients on topics that are generally considered sensitive in nature particularly concerning Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

Conducted on behalf of Pfizer, the survey's results clearly indicate a trend towards more open and candid communication between doctors and patients.

An interesting result of the survey is that approximately 57% of participants believe the increased social acceptance of sexual health topics amongst men in the region, are related to the increased availability of medications such as Viagra.

These medications have created a greater awareness among patients on the subject of ED and the link to other medical conditions such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. However, while the results show that men are becoming more open on the topic of ED, most participants agree that patients' unwillingness to share intimate information and their reluctance to admit they may have a medical condition, are still two main barriers impeding open communication on health related issues.

According to the mini survey, more than three-quarters of the physicians surveyed regularly review their patient's sexual health routine as part of their physical check-ups. 78% of those physicians also agreed that once the subject of sexual health is introduced, patients become more comfortable discussing and sharing potential issues and concerns.

"A patient's willingness to discuss erectile dysfunction and sexual health related topics with their physician is an important step forward for men in the Middle East," explains Dr. Ahmed Al Sakkam, "Whereas this subject may once have been taboo; we are now seeing an increased awareness, as well as a greater level of comfort when patients are speaking with their doctors. The result is a greater sense of satisfaction, which can lead to more openness, intimacy and overall contentment in sexual relations."

Studies have shown that patients who open up to their doctor about health issues are most likely to benefit from medication's such as Viagra, which have led to positive developments in psychosocial functioning. This includes improved quality of life, as manifested by improved confidence, relationships, and self-esteem.
