Abu Dhabi Men's College students represent the UAE in the world class SAE Mini Baja

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, May 26 - 2009 at 11:01
  • PRESS RELEASE

The students of Abu Dhabi Men's College announce their participation and achievement in the global competition organized by the Society for Automotive Engineering Mini Baja Car Competition 2009, which was held on April 7th to 10th 2009 in Oregon in the USA.

This event is primarily aimed at discovering the capabilities of engineers from the beginning of the design process through to the building of the vehicle and on to the actual competition.

The five students, Shaheen Al Bishr, Adel Al Kindi, Adel Al Ali, Butti Al Mazrouei and Salah Al Awlaqi, succeeded in designing and building the prototype of a rugged, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle which is able to negotiate terrain in all types of weather without damage.

"The requirements to carry out on-site modifications to meet the stringent technical necessities were one of the greatest challenges faced by the working group," said Shaheen Al Bishr.

As Chris Etzel, Chairman of SAE international stated:

"The basic goal of this event is to provide a fun, fair and safe competition for all the competitors while maintaining safety to showcase their efforts, as their main focus is to enhance the educational aspect of the engineering field."

ADMC Director Dr. Simon Jones commented: "Our ambitions for success in this field applaud the efforts of those five students who worked so hard to take part in such an important academic event along with 120 other countries. The college management is proud of their high level of performance and commitment to the field of engineering."

The SAE Mini Baja Car Competition has enhanced the student's skills and allowed them to experience a challenge that combines safety, design, and overall appearance.

"The completion of the project took six months between designing and manufacturing, but today we are glad to have participated in this event which is on such an international level," said Adel Al Kindi.

About SAE Mini Baja :

The SAE Mini Baja competition was initiated in 1976 at The University of South Carolina under the supervision of Dr. John F. Stephens. He started the concept of Mini-Baja and subsequently companies manufactured all terrain vehicles retailing for around $800. Apparently, each of these vehicles was proficient of negotiating rough ground with great deal of reliability and velocity. The object of the Mini Baja competition was to design the most competitive, high performance vehicle that is safe to drive and for the least cost.

The 1976 competition required each team to use the comparable specification with same Briggs & Stratton 8 hp, 4- cycle horizontal shaft air-cooled engine. The engine had to stay utterly stocked, and the vehicle must be built within roughly 300hours. Rules from the first competition required that they must be able to proceed in loose sand, mud, rough terrain, and irregular water up to 12" deep. Top speed for the vehicle was to be around 40 mph and the vehicle must be capable of rock climbing at a 30-degree incline. Vehicles are to weigh less than 400 pounds and the total cost should have an artificial price of $450 or less

Globally, this event is called the Baja SAE and has been altering the way students look at the automotive industry for more than 30 years
