In the data driven world of today, one of the biggest challenges faced is the ability to access broadband networks in any location where you operate.

It becomes more challenging if you are located in remote or somewhat unconnected territories or outposts.

So, whether you are a media broadcaster reporting from a hotspot, or an NGO aid worker operating in rural areas or if you are an oil engineer on a rig at sea, communications is always a vital tool to maximize your efficiency and overcome geographical barriers.

Solutions for high-speed data in areas without terrestrial networks have always been somewhat large in size and require the use of bulky external antennas or satellite dishes which limit mobility. In recent years, however, there have been a number of smaller solutions that are about the size of a lab top device, which is a big leap forward.

More recently, Thuraya Telecom Co., the world's leading MSS operator for handheld service, has launched the world's smallest satellite broadband terminal, an A-5 sized terminal, that is exactly half the size of a regular laptop.

According to Mr. Rashid Baba, from Thuraya's Product Management Department, this drastic reduction in size offered by ThurayaIP, which is a third of the size of other available data solutions, surely means that mobility and portability of the data terminal is now a major convenience. "What's even more stunning about this device, despite its very compact size, is its speed which goes up to 444 kbps, and its competitively unique video-streaming capability which is at 384 kbps."

Weighing just about 1300 grams, the portability of this broadband terminal could not be easier. Its handy size means it can simply be integrated within the kit of the media correspondent who is always on the move. Similarly, NGO or military staff no longer need to carry around large devices in the field to send and receive data communications.

Besides its condensed size, ThurayaIP is a user-friendly solution.

"It is based on a plug-and-play concept, without the need for any specialized software,"

said Mr. Baba.

The solution superiority is enhanced by that fact that Thuraya's robust and congestion-free network which provides dedicated channels to ensure greater quality of transmission and service reliability. Thus media customers, for example, can send and receive high-quality video without any interruption.

"Furthermore, the flexibility in choice of data speeds in uplink and downlink make ThurayaIP a highly cost-effective streaming solution and leader in the satellite broadband arena," Mr. Baba explained.
