Alba achieves substantial savings following the completion of a new switching station

- PRESS RELEASE
Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) achieved substantial annual cost savings through the completion of a new 11kV switching station in 2008.
Alba's Power Station faced increased cost of power generation and reduction in power security when it had to reconfigure the power delivery to Potline 3. This had to be done following the forced outages of two of the transformers installed for Potline 3 under the Line 5 expansion project.
The decision to install a new 11kV switching station proved to be a very effective solution after analysing the switching waveforms recorded. With this implementation, the power supply to potline 3 does not depend on Power station 2 as was the case earlier.
Manager Power Projects, Jamal Alaali stated, "Skilful administration of the contract with closer monitoring of contractor's procurement and installation costs enabled us to accomplish the task, well below the budget."
GM Power, Mahmood Asghar appreciated the efforts of the project team and added that the team managed to keep it well under control.
Alba has its own dedicated power plant comprising four eco-friendly power stations having a total generating capacity of 2,200 MW. Using advanced technology and sophisticated environmental safeguards, the power plant is able to reduce waste and generate additional power. Alba has been consistently ranked as one of the largest aluminium smelters in the world and is known for its technological strength and innovative policies.
The company has consistently maintained a high track record for safety and continues to enforce strict environmental guidelines and has surpassed production targets set for the year. It supports numerous community oriented programmes and social activities that have underlined its status as one of Bahrain's leading industrial organisations that remains fully committed to its corporate social responsibility.
