After achieving pole position, fastest race lap and race victory in the season's opening GP2 races in Barcelona, Romain Grosjean got off to a great start ensuring that he maintained his lead out of curve 1, before pulling away to set a series of fastest lap times with only team-mate Petrov able to keep up with the pace.
The two Barwa drivers took it in turn to set fastest lap times until finally it was Grosjean who took the spoils, including fastest race lap time, finishing victorious with his Russian team-mate a meritorious second.
Romain Grosjean: Winning Monaco is something special, even if it is only ten points like every other race, but it was an interesting race and i would like to dedicate this race to Barwa and the employees. We had a big problem with the throttle, and it would have been very dangerous to start if we didn't find the solution: one minute before the start we found it and everything went okay."
GP2 Championship leader Romain Grosjean was again in the heat of the action as the weekend's second Monte Carlo unfolded. Starting from a lowly grid position, Grosjean made relentless progress until a spectacular crash brought Race 2 to a premature end.
Three laps from the finish, Austrian driver Andreas Zuber overcooked his brakes and collided with the Barwa driver, catapulting Grosjean's car into the security fence and leaving the crowd gazing in worried silence until the Swiss-French driver emerged completely unscathed from the spine-chilling accident.
Despite encountering difficulties passing his slower rivals on the notoriously difficult Monaco circuit, Vitaly Petrov set the Race 2 Fastest Lap time to earn one point which was enough to protect his second position overall in the GP2 Drivers Championship.
Vitaly Petrov:
"I'm really happy because we did a good job: in qualifying the car was something unbelievable and in the race I pushed for one lap and finished in second position, so I'm really happy with that. I have a really good relationship with my engineers and mechanics. For this race, and also in Barcelona, we found a really good set up, I think. Last but not least,i would like to dedicate this win to my fans and Barwa"
At the conclusion of another exciting weekend's GP2 racing at the world's most glamorous motor racing circuit, Barwa Team strengthened their position at the top of both Driver and Team Championship leader boards.
Commenting on this occasion, Mr. Hamad Bin Ali Al-Athba, Barwa PR representative for the GP2 series, said:" we are proud with the results of our team in the GP2 series. In Monaco, our drivers got positive results that strengthen our overall position with more than double the points of the closest challenger. I would like to thank the drivers, the technicians and team management. We hope for more wins to come as it serves in further penetrating Barwa's brand into new target market that has positive investment potentials."
In the GP2 Team Championship, Barwa Addax Team has accumulated an incredible 49 points after just two events, more than double the points of their closest challengers. Meanwhile the GP2 Drivers Championship is dominated by Barwa Addax driver Romain Grosjean on 31 points, followed by team-mate Vitaly Petrov in second position on 18 points.
