In addition, volunteers and sponsors were honoured for their outstanding efforts for their support in raising awareness of anti-tobacco initiatives.
Dr. Wedad Al Maidoor, Head of the Tobacco Control Committee, Ministry of Health, said:
"These individuals are shining examples of motivation and dedication, two key ingredients necessary to give up smoking. It is refreshing to see so many people determined to make a positive change in their lives and I'm glad that we were able to be part of this."
The Ministry of Health smoking cessations clinics use nationwide guidelines to provide smokers with comprehensive therapy and guidance to quit the smoking habit.
"Smoking is highly addictive and we understand that people require all types of medical support to bring their will to success," added Dr. Wedad Al Maidoor. "Our campaigns and especially our smoking cessation clinics provide smokers with the relevant means to assist them in their plight to quit".
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is internationally recognized as one of the only effective treatment for smoking cessation. "According to the American Heart Association, NRT is safe and effective when used as part of a comprehensive smoking cessation program," said Dr. Bassam Mahboub, Affiliated Professor Medicine and Chest Disease, University of Sharjah Faculty of Medicine, and Head of Respiratory and Allergy Service, Dubai Health Authority.
"Nicotine replacement gum and patches are available at all clinics and they are offered as treatments free of charge to all UAE Nationals who register to use the program," he added
From 2007 to 2008, the UAE Ministry of Health has been very successful in implementing the foundation of a strong anti-smoking campaign. During the process, the Ministry's initiative has encouraged other conscientious organisations, like Novartis Consumer Health who have partnered with the Ministry in its battle against tobacco use.
"We are happy to be part of the Ministry's active approach towards smoking cessation. Our interests lie primarily in the betterment of our community's well-being and our responsibility is to support the Ministry so that they in turn can provide the public with all the necessary tools they need," said Mr. Hatem Hamad, Operating Unit Head, Arabian Peninsula Novartis Consumer Health.
