Sun powers Al Othaim's retail applications

Saudi Arabia's Al Othaim Markets have turned to Sun Microsystems to deploy an IT infrastructure to run its Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and a comprehensive set of Oracle Retail merchandising, planning, supply chain and stores applications, which was procured in order to manage processes for procurement, selling and monitoring stocks more efficiently.

With 77 branches across the country, Al-Othaim Markets Co. is one of the most distinguished supermarkets in the field of foodstuff and consumer products wholesale.

A comprehensive offering from Sun based on the x64, T2+ and US7 CPU enabled Al Othaim to map right technology to different performance and compliance needs of the retail modules.

Sun's X4250 and T5220 will run the Oracle E-Business application, while the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server will run the Retail databases. These servers will provide Al-Othaim with, very high performance per watt and per rack unit. With inbuilt enterprise class reliability and availability, the servers allow for running large memory demanding, disk-intensive applications more efficiently and boost storage-intensive applications.

"Serviceability features combined with Sun clustering solution provided the required high availability for Retail and EBS environment. There was the need for multiple Operating systems, RISC and CISC architecture for running various Retail applications. With our large scale operations in the kingdom, it was important we had the best IT infrastructure to meet our growth, and Sun provided us with that,"

Sun Partner in the Kingdom, Wipro Arabia Ltd., undertook the implementation of the EBS and Retail solution.
