10,000 pledge to stay tobacco free on World No Tobacco Day

At a formal gathering in Ras Al Khaimah on the 1st of June, officials from Ministry of Health announced that they had received an unprecedented response to No Tobacco Campaign, an awareness drive to acquaint residents about the dangers of tobacco consumption.

"It has been a successful initiative by all standards. We set out to educate people about the hazards and to elicit a response. The campaign has received almost 10,000 pledges from smokers who have refrained from smoking on 31st of May which is observed globally as the World No Tobacco Day," said Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, Head of the National Tobacco Control Committee, Ministry of Health UAE.

"This is only a first step and we aim to build it up consistently. This initiative definitely presents itself as proof of a strong synergy between the corporate, government, students and residents."

The campaign has received a tremendous support across the nation and has been welcomed equally by all. Green Crescent Insurance Company comes on board as the main sponsor.

This campaign has been designed to incorporate all these elements and has reached out from labour camps to corporate leaders, students to housewives, tobacco consumers to passive smokers. Organisations like Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, RTA, Dubal, Al Habthoor, Landmark Group, Safeer Group, Ducab and NAFCO, amongst other, have come forth to support the initiative; while malls such as Ibn Battuta Mall, Al Ghurair mall, Wafi mall, Dubai Festival City, Times Square, Lamcy Plaza, Safeer Mall, Khansaheb, Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall and Khalidiya Mall; and educational hubs like Dubai Academic City- students hub have joined the campaign wholeheartedly in stepping up the message dissemination.

The Campaign has been conceived and executed by Dubai based ExHealth, a company dedicatedly working to provide cutting edge solutions to the healthcare industry.

Preventive Health Services

Some of the prominent programs included in preventive health services are the National Immunization program, which succeeded in eliminating polio completely from the country.

They also include the Malaria Control program and Non-communicable disease program such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, hypertension and obesity. The Sector also initiated a national tobacco control program to curb the tobacco use epidemic in the country. The Preventive sector includes, with reference to the suggested organizational structure of 2001, six departments which are Disease Control, Health Education, Mother and Child Health. About No Tobacco Campaign
The six week long initiative was kicked off on 21st of May under the umbrella of Ministry of Health and supported by Dubai Health Care City. Green Crescent Insurance Company is the main sponsor.

The campaign aimed at generating 10,000 pledges from amongst the tobacco consuming population to quit the habit on 31st of May as an observance of the World No Tobacco Day. June 1st sees the start of the Quit and Win tobacco cessation program rolled out specifically by DHCC to encourage and assist those willing to give up the habit permanently.

Students of the Department of Media and Communications, Mahe Manipal University put together a specially scripted skit in the street play format drawing from real life experiences of smokers, tobacco consumers and passive smokers
A nationwide poster competition has been launched to select noteworthy health warnings aimed at cautioning the tobacco consumers of the hazards associated. The winning poster will go as the official MOH signage across GCC on all packs of tobacco products while top shortlisted creations will be showcased as a dedicated exhibition throughout the nation.
