The awareness campaign, which highlights 5 Green Steps that people can take to reduce their energy, paper and water usage, is targeting employees, visitors and customers across municipal offices in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The green message is being delivered via eye-catching grassroots branding, an SMS push, Twitter and newspaper advertisements.

"The green footprints idea brings to life the fact it's easy to take small environmental steps, while reminding everyone that we need to reduce our carbon footprint, the globally accepted measure of how much carbon dioxide gas individuals and companies release into the world's atmosphere,"

says Nasir Al Jesmi, Public Relations and Communications Director at the Department of Municipal Affairs.

"We have flooded the municipalities with thousands of green footprints to remind and inspire staff to think, feel and act green. This in itself is a small step towards reducing our collective carbon footprint and making the emirate of Abu Dhabi a greener, more pleasant place to live, work and visit," Nasir added.

DMA is using recycled paper for all print elements of the campaign, which is developed around the following messages in English and Arabic:-

1. Shut Down Your PC
2. Save Energy - switch off Lights.
3. Save Water- It's Precious.
4. Reduce, Re-use, Recycle
5. Save Paper- Print Smarter.

About Department of Municipal Affairs:

The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced operations in May 2007, following the Abu Dhabi Executive Council's decision to integrate the Emirate's municipal system. As a new government entity, the Department of Municipal Affairs was created to lead, coordinate and oversee three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The DMA has a regulatory role while the service delivery and operations are at the municipality level.
On the 5th of May 2008, the Department of Municipal Affairs along with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and Western Region Municipality embarked upon a new municipal services journey, with the signing of the historic Municipal Charter which aligns the DMA and three municipalities towards greater collaboration and cooperation.
