The celebrations included several educational, entertaining and fundraising activities such as, an 'Art Out Of Waste' competition, in which participants transformed waste into artwork, this competition unveiled amazing innovative designs, which proved that what we might see as waste, could actually turn into a piece of art. The winners of this competition were Sara Amiri, who designed a doll house, followed by Thereza Raquel and Jessy Husain, who designed a balloon dress and a photo album consecutively.
The celebrations also included a fundraising auction, in which paintings for local artists such as Ms. Nuha Asad and Ms. Karima Al Shomi and dresses by famous designers such as Mr. Walid Atallah were auctioned out, the proceeds of this auction went to the UAE Red Crescent.
Additionally, a cleanup campaign was organized to clean "Al Khan Beach" and "Abu Shagarah Park" in which Al Qasba personnel participate side by side with volunteers, members of the Sharjah Museums Department and the Althonians Fraternity and Sorority.
Commenting on the celebrations, Dina Al Nakhi, Events Manager, Al Qasba Development Authority, said:
"We are very pleased with the great participation our celebrations witnessed, it is a clear indicator to the environmental awareness in our society, it is a pleasure of ours to have organized such an event, through which we take on our social responsibility to a whole new level."
"We hope that this campaign will lead to many more similar campaigns in the future, that incorporate the efforts of all society members whether organizations, individuals or public and private sector representatives, to protects the beautiful environment of the UAE. We would like to thank all the participants, sponsors who played a vital role in the success of this event." concluded Al Nakhi.
A special kiosk was set in Al Qasba during the celebrations, where representatives from Ecobility Energy Solutions LLC informed the visitors on energy saving tricks, such as replacing their regular light bulbs with energy saving ones.
Al Qasba's World Environment day was supported by 'Bee'ah' who donated 1000 fabric bags and around 200 T-shirts to be used during the campaign, and Sharjah Museum department who gave out free entry tickets to all volunteers to go see the Sharjah Aquarium. Also, Sharjah municipality, Sharjah police played a vital role in securing the organization and safety of the whole event.
Established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, the World Environment Day was introduced to focus the world's attention on environmental issues and stimulate politicians to take positive actions towards the environment.
