Dr Tarabichi showcased a new procedure for an ear condition commonly found in the UAE. This was the first time a hospital in the UAE had been invited to participate in the annual event.
LION selects surgeons who have new techniques to treat ENT diseases. Dr Tarabichi was invited by LION to demonstrate his new technique using an endoscope (a surgical instrument which carries a small camera and light to the point of treatment inside the body) which the hospital believes is the first of its kind in the region.
Dr Tarabichi operated on a patient suffering from cholesteatoma, which is a skin cyst that develops in the inner ear. Around 5% of the UAE population develops cholesteatoma and the disease can affect patients at any age. If not properly treated, it can potentially attack the ear causing imbalance, nerve deterioration and deafness.
Dr. Tarabichi treated the skin cyst using a new technique he has developed, using an endoscope.
Ear surgeries are primarily performed using a microscope but Dr. Tarabichi believes that operating with an endoscope allows easier access through the ear canal as opposed to making an incision in the ear to treat the disease and the endoscope can be channeled through the ear canal, unlike a microscope.
"With a 4mm endoscope, which is the same instrument used for sinus surgery, this procedure provides a better field of view into the ear, reduces surgery time and speeds up recovery,"
says Dr. Tarabichi.
Now in its fourth year, this is the first time LION has selected a Dubai hospital to participate in the Live Surgical Broadcast. A total of 11 medical centers/surgeons around the world (UK, France, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Serbia, USA, Brazil, Colombia, UAE) participated in this year's broadcast.
Dr. Tarabichi is an American board certified ENT surgeon with 20 years' experience in the U.S. and UAE.
