Qatargas raises sponsorship amount for Qatar University Chair

Qatargas today announced its continuing support of the Chair of Engineering at Qatar University.

The support of the Chair further underscores the company's commitment to supporting educational initiatives as an investment in the country's future. From this year onwards, Qatargas will increase the annual sponsorship amount being paid to the university.

In a special ceremony today Sheikh Ahmed Bin Jassim Bin Mohamed Al Thani, Chief Operating Officer - Engineering & Ventures, Qatargas, gave the cheque to Dr. Mazen Al-Hasna, Dean, College of Engineering, Qatar University.

Mr. Ghanim Al-Kuwari, Qatargas Chief Operating Officer, Administration, said:
"This contribution is in line with Qatargas' corporate social responsibility endeavors. We are happy to continue our support to Qatar University and the younger generation of professionals who will benefit from this initiative. I am sure the Qatargas contribution in this regard will go a long way in helping several students succeed in their careers."


He added, "We believe that the support and development of engineering expertise is vital to our country's future success. In addition to this support, we are also pleased to be a founding member of the Qatar University Gas Processing Centre."

The agreement to fund a Qatargas Chair position at Qatar University was concluded in May 2004, and the contract started at the beginning of the Academic year in September 2004. The current Qatargas Chair, Dr. Faisal Khan, an expert in Process Safety and Risk Assessment, teaches a number of courses in his field of expertise at the university's College of Engineering. He initiates and guides a number of final year projects amongst the students. As part of the agreement, he also provides technical assistance to Qatargas in his field and provides at least one training course every year.

Qatargas invests heavily in a variety of corporate social responsibility initiatives with a particular emphasis on education, based on its conviction in the importance of developing capabilities of the country's younger generation.

The company extends annual support to the Ministry of Education's English Language program and has sponsored two students from Qatar to attend the GasTech 2009 conference, held in Abu Dhabi last month. This is in addition to a variety of grants provided to local and international schools in Qatar.

Qatargas also sponsors the annual Qatar University Plant Design Competition by donating first and second prices to the teams that present the results of their Plant Design course. The last Plant Design presentations were held on the 4th June this year and five teams participated with a total of 18 students.
