Dubai Metro fares released
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, June 22 - 2009 at 16:19
Students and elderly passengers are to have access to cheap fare deals on Dubai's new Metro system. The transit system will also be accessible by use of a 'Nol' (meaning 'Fare' in Arabic) card, which will come in four versions according to the needs of commuters. The cards will enable use of the Metro, buses, water buses and paid parking zones - although parking for the Metro will be free for train passengers. Continues below>>
'While assessing the fare of mass transit systems, RTA was keen to have in place fares that were affordable to all, as we were seeking to encourage citizens, residents and visitors to use mass transit modes,' said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman and Executive Director of the RTA, at the announcement.
The Nol card will come in a Red version; which will be a paper ticket, valid for up to 90 days for casual users; a Silver card, valid for five years and allowing unlimited top-ups; a Gold version, which will allow access to the Gold Class cabins; and a Blue, personalized version, which will carry the user's photo and will be able to be used by students and the elderly to access their discounts.
Prices will vary from Dhs2 for a short (less than 3km) journey with the Red paper ticket - Dhs1.80 with one of the rechargeable prepaid cards - to Dhs6.50 for Tier three travel on the Red ticket (Dhs5.80 with the other cards).
Fares will remain the same during weekends and public holidays.
