WWF receives Historic building from Dubai Municipality

In a press conference on the 26th of March, 2003, Eng. AbdulRahaman Al Sharid, Director of the General Project Department of Dubai Municipality handed over to WWF a building in the beautiful and historic area of Al Bastakiya, close to the old wall of Dubai.

The traditional two story wind tower building will house the WWF-EWS office in Dubai, and will bolster WWF activities in the region.

Eng. Abdul Rahman added, 'This building has a great historic value thanks to its superb architectural and traditional elements. With a dimension of 25 by 15 meters, it includes several rooms overlooking a beautiful interior yard'

This handover forms part of the MOU signed by HE Qassim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality with Dr. Claude Martin, Director General of WWF on environmental conservation. The memorandum calls for recognizing the importance in conserving the environment, and in working jointly to attain such conservation targets.

Frederic Launay, Director of WWF UAE office, said that, 'WWF's presence in Dubai will strengthen our relationship with Dubai Municipality. This partnership paves the road for conservation work in Dubai.'

Some of the joint projects include the assisting of Dubai Municipality in promoting and implementing a system plan for marine and terrestrial ecosystem as well as to monitor and control illegal wildlife trade.
