Child vaccination program begins in Jordan to protect against world's leading child killer

The Ajloon region in Jordan received a shipment of 15,000 pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine doses, as a donation from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in order to help boost Jordan's efforts to combat pneumococcal disease.

Ajloon was selected by The Ministry of Health being an isolated area where all 5000 children living there will be vaccinated against life threatening diseases like meningitis, bactaeremia and septicaemia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the spotlight on pneumococcal disease as the world's number one cause of vaccine-preventable deaths in children under 5 years of age.

Pneumococcal disease takes the lives of 1.6m people each year, almost half of these deaths occur in infants and children younger than 5 years of age in developing countries.

"Combating the burden of serious disease globally is an important part of Wyeth's mission," said Dr. Alaa Assem, Regulatory, Compliance & Government Affairs Director - Wyeth Middle East and North Africa.

"We are committed to protecting current and future generations from pneumococcal disease by expanding global access to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. It is in that tradition that we are honoured to donate 15,000 doses of the vaccine to help Jordan protect its children against the potentially devastating consequences of this disease."

Highlighting the seriousness of the diseases and to further raise awareness in Jordan, Wyeth hosted a Pneumococcal Forum for the healthcare professionals in Jordan. The forum emphasized the impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) after the introduction into several immunization programs, and the benefits of childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on pneumonia and influenza fatalities in all ages with the spotlight on Jordan, showcasing current measures to combat the world's leading infectious child killer.

Lectures were given by world renowned speakers Prof. Keith Klugman, Chair of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia, United States and Prof. Adriano Arguedas, Director of the Instituto de Atención Pediátrica, San José, Costa Rica.

The WHO recommends the priority inclusion of PCV7 in national immunization programs worldwide. Further, in January 2008, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) of the WHO, issued a preliminary recommendation that pneumococcal disease prevention is to be ranked as a very high priority on a global basis.

Now, a total of 36 countries worldwide include Prevenar on their National Immunization Schedules, of which 6 countries are in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. Prevenar, is currently available in 90 countries around the world, with more than 300m doses distributed.

About Pneumococcal Disease

Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as the pneumococcus, is a bacterium frequently found in the upper respiratory tract of healthy children and adults. The bacterium, however, cause a range of infections - from relatively mild ear infections to fatal pneumonia, meningitis and bacteraemia. Serious pneumococcal infections are most common in young children (especially those < 2 years old), the elderly and immune compromised individuals such as those who are undernourished or HIV positive.

The pneumococcus is the main cause of pneumonia, which kills more children than any other disease. Pneumonia causes nearly 1 in 5 deaths of children under five worldwide and kills more children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined. For those children in developing countries who contract and survive pneumococcal meningitis, one in four are left with serious disabilities, including neurological disorder, kidney disease, deafness, limb amputations, and developmental delays.

About Prevenar
Prevenar (Pneumococcal 7-valent Conjugate Vaccine) is approved by the World Health Organization for active immunisation of infants and children from 6 weeks through 9 years of age against invasive disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F and 23F.

Prevenar may be given at the same time as DTP, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio (OPV or IPV) and varicella. The use of Prevenar should be based on official recommendations taking into consideration the impact of invasive disease in different age groups as well as variability of serotype epidemiology in different geographic areas.
