The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the spotlight on pneumococcal disease as the world's number one cause of vaccine-preventable deaths in children under 5 years of age.
Pneumococcal disease takes the lives of 1.6m people each year, almost half of these deaths occur in infants and children younger than 5 years of age in developing countries.
"Combating the burden of serious disease globally is an important part of Wyeth's mission," said Dr. Alaa Assem, Regulatory, Compliance & Government Affairs Director - Wyeth Middle East and North Africa.
"We are committed to protecting current and future generations from pneumococcal disease by expanding global access to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. It is in that tradition that we are honoured to donate 15,000 doses of the vaccine to help Jordan protect its children against the potentially devastating consequences of this disease."
Highlighting the seriousness of the diseases and to further raise awareness in Jordan, Wyeth hosted a Pneumococcal Forum for the healthcare professionals in Jordan. The forum emphasized the impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) after the introduction into several immunization programs, and the benefits of childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on pneumonia and influenza fatalities in all ages with the spotlight on Jordan, showcasing current measures to combat the world's leading infectious child killer.
Lectures were given by world renowned speakers Prof. Keith Klugman, Chair of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia, United States and Prof. Adriano Arguedas, Director of the Instituto de Atención Pediátrica, San José, Costa Rica.
The WHO recommends the priority inclusion of PCV7 in national immunization programs worldwide. Further, in January 2008, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) of the WHO, issued a preliminary recommendation that pneumococcal disease prevention is to be ranked as a very high priority on a global basis.
Now, a total of 36 countries worldwide include Prevenar on their National Immunization Schedules, of which 6 countries are in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. Prevenar, is currently available in 90 countries around the world, with more than 300m doses distributed.
