Qatargas installs wellhead platform topsides

Qatargas has achieved another major milestone with the installation of the first of three offshore wellhead platform topsides for the Qatargas 3 and Qatagas 4 projects.

The QW7 platform topsides weighing around 2,200 tonnes was carefully positioned above the legs of a previously installed jacket structure and then successfully lowered over the ten pre-drilled wells onto the jacket.

The installation was carried out using contractor, J. Ray McDermott's derrick barge DB101 in a two-hour operation that was completed safely and without incidents. Welding of the topsides to the jacket started immediately, followed by the lifting of the helideck and flare boom. The next step is the hook up and commissioning of the platform systems.

Once completed, the QW7 platform will form one of a trio of platforms which will deliver gas from Qatar's offshore North Field via two new 38" pipelines to the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains 6 and 7 currently under construction at Ras Laffan.

Qatar Petroleum, ConocoPhillips and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. are the shareholders in Qatargas 3, while Qatargas 4 has Qatar Petroleum and Shell as the shareholders. Both Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 are expected to start LNG production in 2010.
