  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, July 20 - 2009 at 15:49

Police in Abu Dhabi issued more than 705,000 traffic fines in the first half of this year, more than three times the number that was issued in the same period last year, reported The National. A total of 705,377 traffic fines were issued, which is equal to one for every second person in the emirate, the paper noted. More than 60% of the fines issued were for speeding. The sharp rise in the number of fines was caused by the clampdown on dangerous driving that was initiated by the police, Col Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, the head of the traffic and patrols directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, told the paper.
