- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, July 28 - 2009 at 12:32
- PRESS RELEASE
The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi (DoT) announced the invitation of qualified local and international consulting firms to submit their bids to conduct a detailed study of the Tram project in Abu Dhabi, one of the future transportation projects in the Emirate.
The 340 km tram system is part of this ambitious and far-reaching plan that will meet the people's and economy's mobility needs as part of 'Plan Abu Dhabi 2030'. It is expected that the light rail and tram service will be operational in 2014.
DoT will work closely with the selected consultant to assess the feasibility of tram lines and assess the financial viability for the project; along with models of the initial design of the tram network and stations, vehicle size and technical specifications. The study will be conducted over a period of 18 months.
The light rail transit/tram system is considered to be one of the most important means of public transport for the capital thanks to large capacity, cost and energy efficiency, and ability to operate in densely populated areas.
