  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, August 04 - 2009 at 09:17
  • PRESS RELEASE

Fresh from the successful launch of the UAE's first satellite, the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) unveiled its new corporate identity reflecting its strategic vision and growth plans for the near future.

The Dubai-based agency also adopted the slogan 'The key to the future' as a mark of its dedication to building the long-term sustainability of the UAE.

The new EIAST logo centers on four geometric shapes, reflecting the four EIAST directions in research and advanced science, linked by white lines symbolizing unity and cohesion.

His Excellency Mr Ahmed Al Mansoori, Director General, EIAST, said:
"The launch of the new corporate identity reflects the UAE's embrace of innovative and inventive scientific pursuits to achieve sustainable development at every level. We will continue working hard to develop EIAST as an internationally recognized institution and a national icon in science and innovation."

EIAST's four-fold agenda includes: promoting the culture of advanced scientific research and technology innovation in Dubai and the UAE, creating an internationally competitive base for human skills development, positioning Dubai and the UAE as a science and technology development hub among advanced nations, and establishing international collaborative links and joint projects with industry and research organizations.

In the near future, EIAST will focus on four main scientific programs: Space programs, Astronomy programs, Energy programs, and Environment and water research programs.

The agency's space programs include DubaiSat-1, the UAE's first remote sensing satellite, which will be followed by the launch of another group of remote sensing satellites currently in development. The satellites will benefit civil applications including urban planning, common transport, environment and water.

EIAST astronomy programs include the 'Emirates Telescope' project, aimed at improving the research base in the UAE, and other initiatives to develop the nation's science and astronomy infrastructure and encourage the spirit of innovation and research among the nation's youth.

Environment and water research programs include observation of bird migration and agricultural research activities, observation of land and sea pollution, mitigating natural disasters, observation and forecasting of fog and sand storms, studying the quality of water in the Gulf region and the impact of water desalination on marine life and environment.

The EIAST energy programmes include renewable and sustainable energy development research, enhancing efficiency of energy resources in Dubai, capitalising on nanotechnology research to enhance fossil fuel consumption efficiency, and solar and wind energy applications.

Established by a Dubai Government decree in 2006, EIAST is charged with promoting the development of a knowledge-based economy, sustainable development and economic growth in the Emirates and beyond. The agency also champions the effective use of highly sophisticated technologies and accurate spatial information for a variety of applications.
