BITS, Pilani-Dubai awards degrees to 295 graduating engineers

BITS, Pilani Dubai, the premier Engineering Institution hosted the Graduation Ceremony for its 6th batch of Graduating Students "Class of 2009" at its campus in Dubai International Academic City on 17th August 2009.

His Excellency Mr. Venu Rajamony, Consul General of India was the Chief Guest for the ceremony. Prof. Dr. L.K. Maheshwari, Vice Chancellor, BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan, India, Mr. M.Salahuddin, Managing Director ETA Ascon group, Dr. Eesa Mohammed Bastaki, Chair, IEEE UAE Section and Mr.Essa Al Ghurair Director, ETA Ascon Group were the guests of honor on the occasion. Prof. Dr. M. Ramachandran, Director BPD organized and conducted the entire proceedings with able support from Mr. M. Riazuddin, Director, ETA, Net. The Degrees and Mementoes were awarded by the Chief Guest and other Guests to the Graduating students.

The "Class of 2009" comprised of a total of 295 students who graduated as Engineers in different disciplines out of which 229 were boys and 66 were girls. The B.E(Hons.) degree in Engineering was awarded in the following areas of specialization.

B.E. (Hons.) Electrical and Electronics Engineering
B.E. (Hons.) Computer Science
B.E. (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering
B.E. (Hons.) Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
B.E. (Hons.) Chemical

Awards were also given to the first and second rank holders in each discipline and also for the best All Round Achievers. BITS Chancellor's Medals were awarded to the toppers of last year's graduated batch.

All the above students completed their 4 years of Engineering studies which included 7½ months of rigorous Internship in reputed industries of UAE including several multinationals such as Siemens, GE Inc. Honeywell, Bosch, Fedex, ABB Ltd etc.

Commenting on the occasion, His Excellency Mr. Venu Rajamony, Consul General of India, said:

There is no doubt that BITS, Pilani Dubai today is the best of the best. It provides outstanding education and has brought forth a formidable group of students to play an important role in every aspect of the society."


Including the 295 students graduated this year, a total of 962 students have graduated from BPD till date. BPD graduates are pursuing higher studies at over 50 very reputed and highly ranked world-class Institutions like Stanford University, Cornell University, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, University of California, University of Pennsylvania, Texas A&M University Texas, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Purdue University, University of Toronto, Canada , Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, University of Manchester, UK etc. Several students from the current graduated batch are also proceeding for their Masters and Ph.D degrees to reputed institutions abroad.

More than 200 highly reputed companies around the world such as Microsoft, Oracle, Sony Ericsson, Sungard, Det Norske Veritas, Panasonic, Dell, Larsen and Toubro, Baker Hughes, MAERSK, J.Ray Mc Dermott, WS Atkins, Emirates Airlines, NAMA Mott McDonald, Honeywell, Sclumberger, Halliburton, Acer, Infosys, Standard Chartered and several more have recruited BPD graduates.

The Ceremony was attended by over 600 guests comprising of students, their family members and friends, Heads of Universities, Heads of Companies offering Practice School and Placement and Faculty and Staff of BITS, Pilani Dubai.

At the ceremony, Dr. M. Ramachandran, Director, BPD, also announced that BITS, Pilani Dubai has received due approval from KHDA to offer 8 higher degree and other specialized programmes for working professionals as evening classes and the same will commence from the ensuing semester.

BITS, Pilani - Dubai (BPD) is a branch campus of the internationally reputed Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS, Pilani) - India. It was set-up in September 2000 in association with the ETA Ascon Star Group, in response to the growing needs for quality Engineering education among the residents of the Middle East. BPD currently offers Engineering Programmes at the undergraduate level in 7 different specializations- Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. All the programmes are of 4 years duration. An Internship of 7½ months in reputed industries is included within these 4 years.

Recently, BITS, Pilani along with its Dubai Campus has been accredited with the highest grade "A" by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Govt of India, scoring the highest points among all private universities in India.

BITS, Pilani-Dubai is located at Dubai International Academic City(DIAC) from the year 2007 and is the first university to have its own campus in DIAC. Previously, BITS, Pilani-Dubai was located at Dubai Knowledge Village(DKV) and was also the first institution to move into Dubai Knowledge Village, when DKV was constructed in 2003.

BITS, Pilani- Dubai has made great progress in the last 9 years. Its growth has been really phenomenal both in terms of its size and quality, in all important parameters and also in its contribution to the society at large.

In brief, BPD's students' strength has grown from 61 to 1750 with 27% of the total strength being girls. Programmes offered have grown from 2 to 7. Faculty strength has grown from 7 to 100 with not a single part time faculty and a large number of faculty being Ph.D holders. The labs have grown from 2 to 25 in the last 9 years.

BITS, Pilani - Dubai has entered into collaboration with 7 reputed Universities around the world. The Institute is recognized as the largest Students' Branch in GCC, of IEEE, by the internationally reputed IEEE Association and also has been recognized as Centre for other international professional associations such as SAE, ASHRAE, ASME and ACM.

The three most important features of the educational programmes at BITS and BPD which no other university has, is Practice School [internship], thesis & inter-disciplinary exposure to all the students in the first two years.

BPD has collaboration with 274 reputed Industries in U.A.E (grown from initial 7) to offer Internships to our students for 7-1/2 months which is a very valuable part of their Graduation requirement. The students receive monthly stipends ranging from Dhs.1000 to Dhs.4000 entirely based on their performance.
