About South African Airways:
South Africa's national airline, South African Airways (SAA) is one of the oldest airlines in the world and was born on 1 February 1934 after the South African government took over the assets and liabilities of Union Airways, which up until then operated as an air mail service.

South African Airways is spreading its wings across the African continent and internationally with plans to grow its route network. The airline's route network plan is in keeping with plans for growth following its deep and fundamental restructuring. The network strategy focuses on SAA as an African carrier with global reach, enhancing Johannesburg as a hub, and moving capacity to more profitable routes. At a time when many other airlines are consolidating or reducing their flights, the success of SAA's restructuring programme, which it embarked on in March 2007, has left the airline well placed to explore growth plans for the future. We have achieved our goals set in the restructuring programme, and the airline is well positioned, both financially and operationally, for the future.

Africa: The airline is first and foremost set to carry out its mandate of being an African airline with global reach by further expanding its African route network. New destinations are being added, capacity on especially those routes that are doing well are being increased and improvements will be made in the product offering on the continent by opening new lounges. In Africa, we have increased our frequencies on the Lagos, Nigeria route to seven per week and from two to three on the Douala, Cameroon route. An ultra-modern Business class lounge will be opened in Lagos in the fourth quarter of 2009.

International: Our international route network offers further travel options for the more than 7,4-million people we fly every year. From 8 April 2009 SAA added Buenos Aires, Argentina, to its international routes. Capacity has been added to key international routes, including Perth which is now operated to daily and flights to Buenos Aires has been increased from two to three per week. The airline's strong focus on growing its already extensive network across the country is aligned to its intention to bring the world to Africa and take Africa to the world.

SAA today carries more than 7 million passengers a year on a route network that serves 34 cities in 26 countries. SAA's unrivalled network, featuring connections to 19 destinations within South Africa with the assistance of regional partners, and more than 20 cities across the rest of the continent, makes it the savvy traveller's 'gateway to Africa'. SAA was the first airline based in Africa to become a member of Star Alliance. A total of 11 Alliance members currently service Africa as part of their route network. SAA has one of the strongest footprints on the continent, particularly in East and West Africa.

Members of SAA's Voyager loyalty programme benefit as they can now earn and use their accumulated miles on most of the member carriers within the alliance. As a member of the Star Alliancetm, South African Airways is able to offer its customers more than 18,100 daily flights to 975 destinations in 162 countries. SAA also has code share agreements with a number of carriers including Star Alliancetm partner airlines. South African Airways (SAA) has code share agreements with all flights operated by the Emirates Airline, Egypt Air and Saudi Arabian Airlines to South Africa.

In addition to the direct flights through Code Share operations, SAA customers can also easily connect onto a number of daily flights to all points in South Africa operated by SAA from its Johannesburg hub at OR Tambo International Airport. This is in addition to South African Airways forming strategic alliances through SPA's with carriers operating from all points in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Jordan to connect with our code share flights from the Middle East.

About Code Share:
Code sharing is intended to provide enhanced connectivity and greater benefits for passengers. Code share means marketing and selling the flights of another airline as if they are the flights of the marketing carrier's airline. In a code share environment there are two partner airlines where one airline is the operating carrier (whose aircraft and crew operate the flight) and the other is the marketing carrier (which places its two digit airline code on the operating carrier flight). In the case of South African Airways its two digit code is SA.
