Mr. Qassim Sultan, Chairman of the Dubai 2003 Organising Committee and Director-General of Dubai Municipality told members at an Organising Committee meeting held on April 16 that the Committee will meet every Wednesday, starting from April 23 at DICC, which will be the venue of the Annual Meetings.

Mr. Sultan asked the heads of the various specialized committees to quickly put together all their requirements for the Annual Meetings and finish their tasks on time and on schedule.

Representatives from the Public Relations and Administrative Services committees provided an update of the work done so far. Their presentations covered a number of tasks and areas including the reception that will be accorded to visiting delegations at Dubai International Airport.

The committee also discussed the visual communications that would be in place including signages and banners with Dubai 2003 logo. The committee will also approach local banks to facilitate transactions for the benefit and convenience of the visiting delegates.

The committee on Communications presented an overview of the preparations undertaken by them with regard to the wireless and fixed telecommunications facilities and products that will be provided to delegates including mobile phones, telephone connections to laptop and desktop computers and sophisticated equipment that would further enhance the performance of the telecommunications network at the venue of the Annual Meetings.

Special kiosks will be set up at DICC to provide information to the delegates about the telecommunications facilities and services that will be available. A central dedicated telephone line for Dubai 2003 (Tel. No: 402 2003) has also been established. Teams of engineers and technicians will also be provided on a round-the-clock basis to maintain and carry out any repairs to telecommunications and computer equipment.

The Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund were first held in Washington DC in 1946. They are hosted by an international city one year in three. Dubai and the UAE were selected because of its highly developed transportation and logistics infrastructure, growing importance as a financial hub and its established position as an oasis of opportunity.
