Yousuf Bastaki's speaking appearance further reinforces the strong relationship between AUS and Emal.

In March 2009, a grant from Emal enabled AUS to host an expanded programme of engineering debate at the International Symposium on Mechatronics and Applications.

Yousuf Bastaki spoke passionately about the engineering field, encouraging the job seekers in the audience to join an industry that is the primary focus of Abu Dhabi's economic diversification strategy.

"Construction work at Emal is on track, on budget and over 60% complete. This venture should be of great interest for any graduate who wants to be a part of the largest diversification project being undertaken in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The skills you will learn, the challenges you will face and the opportunities you will be presented with will be unlike anything your peers will experience in the engineering field,"
said Bastaki during his speech.

The speech was part of an ongoing series of seminars being hosted by AUS. The programme is designed to bring together business leaders, job seekers and educators in a relaxed format.

"The Alumni Association has created networking events, such as this Iftar, to enable you to join together and re-establish friendships and make new acquaintances to extend your professional webs," said AUS Chancellor Dr. Peter Heath in his address to the students.

"AUS will continue its support for you as you proceed forward in your careers and contribute your many talents to those of society around us. As you take on increasingly more complex professional challenges, your achievements will enhance the reputation of the university," he added.

The meeting was also attended by AUS Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Thomas Hochstettler; Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah; as well as several other senior university officials.

Note:
Emal is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex.

The project will be built in two phases and utilise Emirati-developed technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, Emal will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two.

The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.

Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities. This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 17,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and almost 2000 people direct employment during operations.

Emal adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
